When you're creating a video, there is one and only one thing you need to pay attention to, and that is "audience retention."

What is Audience Retention?

Audience retention indicates how long your video keeps viewers engaged. If your video has an audience retention of 2 minutes and 36 seconds, it means that, on average, viewers are watching your video for 2 minutes and 36 seconds.

Why is Audience Retention Important?

Imagine a video ranking at the top on YouTube for a specific keyword with an audience retention of 3 minutes. You create a video on the same keyword, and although it doesn't get many views initially, it has an audience retention of 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

Now, YouTube wants people to spend as much time on its platform as possible. Therefore, after some time, YouTube will start showing your video higher in search results. This, in turn, can lead to an increase in views, likes, shares, comments, etc., over time, and you can gain more subscribers.

So, always strive to make your audience watch your video for as long as possible when you're creating content on a particular topic.

Avoid Fake Metrics

You need to understand what the real measure of success on YouTube is. If you share your video on WhatsApp groups or Facebook groups, and it gets more views, but the audience retention is low, YouTube won't value your video much, and it won't gain visibility in searches.

Similarly, if you ask your friends or students to like and comment on your video, but the audience retention is low, your video won't find a place on YouTube's search.

In most cases, teachers focus on views, likes, and comments and often ignore audience retention. So, it's crucial to shift your focus to the right metrics. If you pay attention to audience retention and deliver content that keeps viewers engaged, you can achieve success on YouTube.
