Turn a class list into balanced random groups — choose how many students per group or how many groups you want, keep certain students apart or together, avoid repeating last time’s pairings, and reshuffle until the mix feels right. How to use the group & team maker
- 1Paste your student names, one per line — or click "Save my list" so it is there next time.
- 2Choose either students-per-group or total number of groups.
- 3(Optional) Add rules: keep certain students apart, or keep some together.
- 4(Optional) Name the groups by number, animal, or colour, and turn on "avoid repeating last pairings".
- 5Click "Make groups", then "Shuffle again" until the mix feels right.
- 6Present on the projector, print / save as PDF, copy the list, or download a PNG to share.
Questions, answered
Can I keep certain students apart?
Yes. Add a "keep apart" rule for any two students and the tool will place them in different groups. If the groups are too small to separate everyone, it tells you and gets as close as possible.
Can I keep some students together?
Yes. Add a "keep together" rule and those students will always land in the same group — useful for pairing a stronger student with one who needs support, or keeping a project pair intact.
Can I set the number of groups instead of group size?
Yes — switch the mode to "# of groups" and the tool spreads students as evenly as possible across that many groups.
Can I stop the same students being grouped together every time?
Turn on "Avoid repeating the last shuffle’s pairings" and each new shuffle tries to give students different group-mates than they had last time.
Can I give the groups fun names?
Yes — name them by number (Group 1, 2, 3), by animal (Lions, Tigers, Eagles…), or by colour. Great for making teams feel like teams.
How do I use the groups in class?
Use "Present" for a big projector-friendly view, "Print / PDF" for a handout, "Copy" to paste the list anywhere, or "PNG" to download an image you can share on WhatsApp or your LMS.
What happens to leftover students?
Remaining students are distributed one-by-one across the groups so the sizes stay as balanced as possible.
Does it save or upload my class list?
Everything runs in your browser. If you click "Save my list", it is stored only on your own device (local storage) — never uploaded to us. Clear it any time.
