Quality of an educational video is very important because nowadays videos are one of the highly used assets for training. Teachers in school, colleges select and recommend videos to their students for flipped classrooms. Your video can also be picked by a teacher if it is a quality video. But what are the quality parameters for a video? How does one measure the quality of a video?
There can be a long list of parameters to measure the quality of an educational video. But, over time I have identified 3 simple parameters to measure the quality of an educational video. If you focus on these three parameters you will know what needs to be improved in your video.
These three parameters are 1) Content Quality, 2) Presentation Quality and 3) Production Quality.
1. Content Quality
The first thing to check in every educational video is its content. If the content of an educational video is not correct, misleading or ambiguous than there is no point in checking its presentation quality and production quality.
Being a teacher, you already know your subject well. So, it is highly unlikely that your content will be wrong. But still, it is important to plan your video in advance so that you don’t jump from one topic to another during the recording. It will help you to keep your videos short. I have shared the way content can be planned for different types of educational videos in one of the posts.
This is why it is very important to set the learning objectives of each educational video in advance. Learning Objective is a statement that represents the small and measurable unit from a topic.
Learning Dialogue
Furthermore, a video is being used as a monologue, a teacher delivering the lectures. This makes a video, teacher-centric. If we can provoke a student to participate in the learning activity from a video that this video is no longer a teacher-centric video. It’s no more a monologue, it becomes a dialogue. The content quality of an educational video can be improved by converting a monolog video to a dialogue video. Prof. Sahana Murthy gives these types of videos a name, Learning Dialogue or LeD.
If you convert your educational video from Learning monologue to Learning Dialogue it will have a positive effect on students. furthermore, it will also help you to get more engagement on YouTube videos as students will participate in comments for a reason.
So, a learning dialogue is good not only for students but also for your Educational YouTube Channel. This can be one of the ways to grow your educational YouTube channel.
Reflection Spot
If you know about subject pedagogy and active learning strategies than you can easily think of elements that will convert your educational video into a learning dialogue. Otherwise, you can simply put one reflection spot in the video. Dr. Jayakrishnan M, who used reflection spot in his MOOCs on IITBombayX define reflection spot in one of his blogs like this.
reflection spots, comprising in-video questions followed by an explanation, which imitates a learning dialogue between an instructor and the learner in a classroom.
In simple terms while planning the content for your educational video if you also plan a reflection spot. It will convert it to a learning dialogue which will make it more engaging for students.
2. Presentation Quality
Once your content is finalized and you know exactly what needs to be presented in what order than you can start planning a presentation. Presentation makes an impact as a famous
- Engaging content
- Speak clear and
- Create better slides
- Production Quality
- Better Hardware
- Editing skills
- Technical Skills
